START e-Business Training for ArabicSpeaking Residents of Australia
Smart Teaching for Arabic Residents on Technology (START) is a training program that aims to enhance the opportunities for Arabic residents in Australia to secure employment or by proceeding further in this training, they will be able to establish and run an online business via providing computer (Information & Communication Technologies ICT) training bi-lingually in Arabic and English. This bi-lingual ICT training will also improve English skills. This project is supported by Flinders University, College of Education, Psychology and Social Work. This START Participation Information Sheet includes more detailed information about this START Project.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of collecting data is to improve the teaching and learning activities in each phase of the START Training Program. By the end of this study and START Training, we may reach to the optimal combination of factors that can achieve the highest learning and teaching outcomes.
Participant Involvement
Participation is this study is voluntary and you can opt-out of the research at any stage. Regardless whether you choose to participate in this research study or not, you can still enrol in the START Program to improve your ICT Skills which enhances your opportunities for employment or to enable you to establish your own online business. During this START Training, if you agree to be part of the research component of this work, data will be collected about your engagement and activities, under nicknames/pseudonym, which means all your data will remain anonymous. Collected data will be securely stored in password-protected folders.
If you agree to participate in the research study, you will be asked to:
- attend a one-on-one phone interview with the researcher, Dr Amelie Hanna, to assess your potentials to establish your own e-business. This interview may take up to an hour. This interview will not be audio-recorded.
- participate in practical tests at the beginning and at the end of each learning module.
- answer a survey at the end of each module.
- participate in the learning activities – which will be recorded under your nickname/ pseudonym.
- If you chose to participate in the final follow up interview, this interview will last about an hour. It will be audio-recorded.
Withdrawal Rights
You may, without any penalty, decline to take part in this research study. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you may, without any penalty, withdraw at any time without providing an explanation. To withdraw, please contact the Chief Investigator or you may just refuse to answer any questions / close the internet browser and leave the online survey/ not participate in exercises at any time.
Confidentiality and Privacy
Only researchers listed on this form have access to the individual information provided by you. Privacy and confidentiality will be assured at all times. This research uses nick name (or pseudonym) to ensure that your confidentiality is maintained. No data, including identifiable, non-identifiable and de-identified datasets, will be shared or used in future research projects without an explicit consent.
Data Storage
The information collected may be stored securely on a password protected computer and/or Flinders University server throughout the study. Any identifiable data will be de-identified for data storage purposes unless indicated otherwise. All data will be securely transferred to and stored at Flinders University for at least five years after publication of the results.
Eligibility Criteria
To participate in this START Training, you will need to be:
- Arabic-speaking resident in Australia, and
- Have basic (or higher) level of English, and
- Have basic (or higher) level of computer skills, and
- Looking for employment or willing to establish e-business (online business), and
- Have work rights in Australia

To participate in this START Training, you will need to:
- Meet the Eligibility Criteria
- Have a valid email address for registration
- Have a phone number for initial assessment phone interview.
- Provide full name and nick name.
- Read the Information Sheet & Consent Form and sign to the Electronic Consent Form.
